SLUUG Steering Committee Minutes - March 2007

Election Results

  • The ballots were opened and counted.
  • There were 24 valid ballots.
  • Results:
    • Barry Morrison and Craig Buchek were elected for 3-year terms on the Board.
    • The incumbents were re-elected for the following positions:
      • Vice President: Stan Reichardt
      • Secretary: Craig Buchek
      • Treasurer: Lee Lammert
      • St. Louis LUG Chair: Craig Buchek
    • Gary Meyer got the most votes for President, but respectfully declined.
      • Carl Fitch got 2nd most votes, and accepted the Board's appointment.
    • There was a tie in the vote for St. Charles LUG Chair: Carl Fitch and Fred Smith.
      • We will ask Fred Smith if he will accept the position; otherwise Carl will fill it.
    • Other votes were recorded for:
      • Board: Clarence Johnson, Gary McKee
      • Secretary: Rich Seibel
      • Presentation Manager: Jim Roe, Stanford Baldwin, Barry Morrison, Gary Meyer, Gary McKee

  • Lightning Talks
    • Most were good.
    • Jeff Muse's talk on wget was really good.
    • Ed Howland's talk on DST changes was good and very thorough.

STLLUG - Feb 15

  • Ten-minute Tips (each person sits at the keyboard)
    • Good. Wide diversity of topics and lengths.

SOLARIS - Feb 20

  • Hands-on: Installing virtual machines, and using new Solaris process management tools
    • Very hands-on due to low attendance; learned a lot as a consequence.

STCLUG - Feb 22

  • TOPIC: Java Development for Cell Phones by Carl Fitch
    • A lot of interaction and discussion.

HZWLUG - Feb 27

  • Went through CD of PDFs that Stan had developed and handed out.
    • Included lots of Linux magazines and training.

SECURITY - Feb 28

  • NO MEETING THIS MONTH.

Small Business Expo

  • St. Louis Business Expo by St. Louis Small Business Monthly
    • March 20, 11:00-6:00
    • St. Charles Convention Center
  • We have a booth with two tables and electricity.
    • Lee is in charge of setting up and getting volunteers to man the booth.
  • Wifi was too expensive.
    • Can we find someone with a wireless cell card to use instead?
  • Carl will talk to EPC to get some computers to demo.
  • Steering Committee approved $200 for booth cost and expenses.

Sponsorships

  • Effort should be directed to find new sponsors.
  • No effort means no new sponsors.

Dial-up Line Removal

  • Has WU cancelled lines?
    • Yes!
  • Billing is still in dispute.
    • Lee will be working with Wash U to correct the problem.

System Administration

  • Dark keeps crashing
    • Has slowed down.
      • This supports the overheating theory.
    • Need to quickly move to new systems or replace dark's hardware.
      • Gary predicts failure rate is increasing and will be more than once a day by end of month February.
      • System may be DEAD in/before APRIL!
      • This project needs emergency priority!
    • Gary will ask Allen @ Wash U if heat may be a problem!
  • Barry was supposed to talk to John Hodge about assisting with installing more AIX disk space.
    • Not yet able to talk to John Hodge, hopefully next week or so.
  • Michelob
    • Volume of mail stabilized once graymilter was activated.
    • Michelob depends on NFS filesystem from Dark!!!
  • Bud, Budlight - see Server Migration Project below.

Server Migration Project

  • Stan updated most pages on the STLLUG site.
    • Removed dead links.
    • Rewrote membership page.
    • Removed link to sign-up page that was not working.
  • Carl fixed (hopefully) the sign-up CGI page to reduce spam.
  • Craig has been working on testing email.
    • Craig to compare notes with Carl on Postfix configuration.
  • Craig has been working on installing and configuring latest Drupal.
  • Need to work on getting clients to configure to use IMAP.
  • Jeff Muse got Mailman working and tested.
    • Craig found a Drupal module for Mailman.
    • Will be quick and simple to migrate mailing lists once we move the MX record.
  • Craig and Carl were to get together to work on things, but weather and Craig moving got in the way.

Website Library

  • Stan R. and Ted P.
  • No presentation uploads yet - waiting for migration
  • No migration means no progress this month.

Other Old Business

New Business

  • North County Journal is looking for story ideas.
    • Gary Meyer suggested they come to a meeting of ours to write a story.
    • It was suggested that the Hazelwood LUG would be a good venue.
      • Newbie topics would be good for the reporter.
      • We should get word out to encourage high attendance that meeting.

Blue Sky

  • We need to discuss low attendance figures sometime soon.

Board Meeting

  • A Board meeting was held.
  • Carl Fitch was accepted as President.
  • Other "clearly winning" positions were accepted.

Follow-up and Action Items

  • Craig - print out previous minutes.
  • Craig - finish up work on email server.
  • Craig - get people to test using IMAP to connect to Bud from their email clients.
  • Craig - get with Chris Byrd to work on Drupal and other stuff.
  • Carl and Craig - get together to work on new servers.
  • Gary - get Sun 1U boxes from Craig, and install them at Primary.
  • Lee - provide power, food, and drink for those working on servers.
