Server Admin

  • New server from Contegix - Nimbus [tentative]
    • Contact Lee or SysAdmin list for info
  • Bud Light is still offline.
  • New server installed from Noah - thanks!
  • IBM X325, dual P4 Xeon 2.8 GHz, 2x72 GB.
    • Name: Golden Wheat
  • Noah has two more Dell 2850s for installation at IT Enterprises for the OS lab, to be supported by SLUUG. Noah to contact them and confirm installation - this will be a good indication of the support level they wish to have for an ongoing relationship.
  • Ongoing: Make sure docs are up to date.

SLCL Room Reservations

  • Process has changed. Limited to 6 months. Next round may be first Saturday in April.
  • Reserving a meeting room now done on line - http://www.slcl.org/services/reserve.htm
  • Payment required within 14 days, or we lose reservation.
  • To avoid problems, payments need to be made separately to each SLCL Branch.
    • Stan has put in requests for Hzlwd, SLACC, & STLlug from Aug thru Dec.
    • Stan will front payment for Hzlwd.
    • Payments need be made before 21 April (2 wks)(if Library grants dates).
    • Gary has reservation codes to cancel STLlug.
      • - -Gary in favor of moving to IT Enterprises
      • - -Deadline to give Library the payment MAY be the day of the "test mtng of StLopenSolaris".
    • Phil has info for SLACC but we aren't sure of Phil's availability.

Wash U Cleanup

  • Jerry Stute, Jeff Muse, and Eric Xu volunteered to cleanup Wash U site.
  • Gary Meyer is Captain.
  • Captain Gary Meyer still AWOL. Search party has not reported back.
  • Pending until next month at the earliest.

IRC Channel

  • Charles Sharp created an IRC channel on irc.freenode.net.
  • Channel is named #sluug.
  • Typically 7 people on at times.
  • Would like to have someone give a tutorial on using IRC, and show off our channel.
  • Craig suggested that we include the IRC channel in Steering Committee meetings.
    • Will be hard to figure out the best way to get the online folks to participate.
  • Stan will put the IRC channel info up on the web site.
  • Stan will put the IRC channel info on ANNOUNCE messages.

Purge SYSADMIN mailing list

  • Stan would like us to clean up the SYSADMIN mailing list, to eliminate people who have not been active for the past year.
    • We decided to send a message out to the list, asking who wants to stay on the list. Then we can remove folks that are not staying active.

New Attendance Sheets

  • Stan made new attendance sheets for:
    • SLACC, STEERCOM, SLUUG, STLLUG, STCLUG, and HZWLUG
    • Yet to do: STLOSUG and SNUG, and groups on HIATUS.

SBE

  • March 18 @ St. Charles Convention Center
  • Slightly bigger crowd than last year
  • Gave out about 50 flyers
  • Excellent booth location - near Green Space

New Business

  • Craig has been adding some packages to his server; would be willing to add them to SLUUG servers.
    • fail2ban - temporarily ban IPs that have too many SSH failures (unanimous agreement)
    • fcheck - file integrity checker - emails files that changed since last time run
    • logcheck - email anomalous log entries
    • munin - monitoring of system details
    • awstats - web stats
  • Carl recommended using one of the Sun Netras as a log server.
  • Craig wondered if we could put sudo back on Bud.
    • Configure it to require root password instead of user's own password.
    • Will follow up on SYSADMIN list.
  • Craig wondered if we could start applying the patches pending for Bud.
    • There are a lot of patches pending now, including kernel and security fixes.
    • We have some concern with DNS patches, but Craig has applied them on his systems without issues.
    • Will follow up on SYSADMIN list.

Blue Sky

  • Speculate on events, plans, policy, procedures, projects.
  • Noah has been helping the Arch Reactor hacker space.
  • General Meeting every Tuesday at 7:30 PM.
    • Frequently open at other times by members.
    • How can we best cross-pollinate?
    • Great place for hands-on projects.
      • Arduino projects
      • Robotics
      • Arts and crafts
      • Costume building
