Gary took most of the time for BASE discussing "Chromebooks", specifically the little known "devide password", the DOWNLOAD folder internally stored rather than in the cloud, method and result of dealing with a changed password on the gmail-account, position of keys,... he was joined by Steve Stegman, Don Ellis, and others. * * MAIN: “The Twinkling of a Distant Star”: Dorothy Gibson, the Titanic, & the 20th Century by Scott Granemann * What connects the highest-paid silent film actress in the world, the Titanic, a fascist spy, Times Square, the **Saturday Evening Post**, and changes in communications technologies over the last 100 years? By tracing one woman’s life through the 20th century I’ll get into many nooks & crannies that illuminate the enormous changes we’ve seen in culture, society, various technologies, & even maritime safety & laws. * Sadly, it just seemed //**"too non-technical"**//! It may have made an amusing story IN the **Saturday Evening Post** but we needed stronger hilites on the technical points such as: the stage lite bar, the rolling stage (to keep the sun angle),... Somehow there just seemed to be too much time spent on other details. ==== SNUG - August 17 ==== * [[http://snug.sluug.org/|SNUG]] is the St. Louis Novell Users Group lunch time meeting. //**??? * TOPIC: A really good, interesting broadcast presentation on__ ------------_.**// The speakers spoke very clear English and the sound quality was good. ==== STLLUG - August 18 ==== * [[http://www.stllinux.org/|STLLUG]] is the St. Louis Linux Users Group. * ** *NOTE LOCATION CHANGE REQUIRED FOR AUGUST* ** * Meeting location change because the host of the usual meeting space at UMSL's ITE (i.e. Bill) is out town. * VENUE Chuck arranged for us to be at Graybar. . * TOPIC: Agile by Craig Very good talk. You know, that line of reversed-video text at the bottom of your Vim window? A filename? Maybe some numbers off to the right? Is the status line even visible? For far too many of us, the Vim status line is a sadly-neglected chunk of valuable Vim real estate, and it's capable of *way* more than most people realize. We'll cover some simple (and quick) ways to stuff it full of useful information, and then discuss a few tricks that -- with just a little more effort -- can take your Vim experience to a whole new level. Bill has far too many years of experience as a systems architect and software developer, working on everything from wiki software for Internet startups to global identity management solutions for Fortune 500 companies. He’s an active member of the Open Source community, and even served as president of the Perl Foundation for a couple of years (but try not to hold that against him). He’s also a long-time user and advocate of Vim, and has given many well-received classes and presentations on Vim to several organizations throughout the US. Bill gave well received talks/classes at Strange Loop and at the Ohio Linux Fest in 2011. An additional bio provided for Strange Loop 2013 https://thestrangeloop.com/sessions/21st-century-vim) * * Steve Stegman thinks CHUCK D is working Tutorial on Setting Up a VPN and had been scheduled for Sept!!! We are just PRESUMING it was best to let Bill Odom slip back to Sept since he was sick in Aug BUT if Chuck has been working hard to be ready for Sept, perhaps we should try to schedule Bill for later??!?? * BUT, Bill frequently travels BUT we note that he usually speaks at StrangeLoop her ein St and that is the next day SO...he likely SHOULD be here Wed nite. * Gary exchanged texts with Bill last Friday but HAS NOT YET gotten a reply from this wknd on his intent. //**Gary will try to persue Bill & Chuck and resolve. **// * Possible backups are: * Hardware inspection using common tools - Stan R maybe (Best chance) * -OR- Search engines for open or default set-web-camera by Steve Stegmann. They are the 2nd & 3rd in the current order. I suggested to Steven that it would be best to add some material on: what is AWS Glacier & why we would want to compute the hash.
