STATUS: DONE
WHAT: Linux at the Open Network Laboratory WUSTL
BY: Dr. Parwatkar of WUSTL
SYNOPSIS: A brief sketchy summary goes here.
WRANGLER: Ken Johnson
ABSTRACT: NO
BIO: NO
REMARKS:
Gary: was looking forward to it. Found it interesting
Lee: was pretty amazing the kinds of things they were doing there
Dave: Informative. Not the kind of things I do
Gary: Doing network testing, deliberately pushing bounds of capacity. Interested in presentation dynamics.
Was good that presenter brought along another person from lab to answer certain technical questions
The more she talked, reinforced idea that they don't normally present on the topic. "A lot of what we do is for commercial contracts. Can't go into a lot more detail." Reticent.
Appreciated the talk. Surprised that lab seems to have shrunk in size. Used to have larger operation.
NEWLUG - April 28

Meeting Schedule
SUMMARY:
We try to track prospects to give presentations at our SLUUG General meeting and LINUX meetings.
We try to segregate topic types as either BASE, MAIN or LINUX, with BASE and MAIN given at the SLUUG General meeting.
We always want to have alternative topics on hand if primary speaker doesn't show.
We want BASE topics that are oriented toward simpler Personal Computing. Short is good.
We want MAIN topics that are oriented more toward advanced or Enterprise Computing.
LINUX topics could be either at the General meeting or at the St. Louis Linux Users Group (STLLUG) meetings.
Gary will continue to explore different computer manufacturers (ex: Cray) who might be able to do presentation "Where are they now?"

Gary would love to get a presentation on status of the servers, featuring Mike, Chuck, Lee
Another possibility would be Lee could give a presentation on massive data recovery being performed evening of 2019-04-29
Dave has noticed different handling of possible spam by SLUUG email system, and would like presentation on evolution of the email system.
Dave & Stan would like long 'spammy' tag not inserted into subject line on SLUUG STEERCOM emails
From Mike Knight's email 3:31am 2019-04-28:
1 QUESTION: Should the "Subject:" of probable sp_m be changed to indicate that?
2 QUESTION: Should high scoring sp_m be rejected and returned to sender?
3 QUESTION: Should moderate scoring sp_m be moved to a "junk" folder of the member's inbox by the system?
2019-06-03
2019-07-01
Lee: no updates this month. ClamAV & SpamAssassin are running, SA is giving scores, but up to user to decide what to do with them.
Gary: good that things are running, but would be nice to get a presentation on what is there and what it does. Would be good for everyone to realize what's been done to make things work.

2019-09-30 (for October)
Mike Knight found issues with ClamAV daemon, and memory/swap shortage. System boot seemed to mostly clear up.
Lee has Bock virtual instance running on new hardware. Had some trouble transferring large files.
Lee upgraded Bock virtual host to 32G memory today.
Gary Meyer was not getting STEERCOM email on his Apple/MAC laptop.
2019-11-04
2019-12-02
Lee: System seems to be running smoothly since additional RAM was added to physical host.
Lee: Reminder that if anyone needs SLUUG critical info, it's stored on BOCK /home/SLUUG
2019-12-30 (for January 2020)
Christmas Day SLUUG certificate would not work with securing email. Did not disrupt web site availability, nor remote SSH access. Mike Knight and Craig Bucheck tackled problem.
Successful test completed in September, will repeat in December
2020-02-03
Our *automated* LetsEncrypt free SSL certificates for websites on BOCK test was successfully completed in September, was to be repeated in December.
There was a problem Christmas Day with SLUUG certificate holding up email.
QUESTION: Was this related?
QUESTION: Do we know what happened with SLUUG certificate not working with securing the email on Christmas Day?
Certificate had expired, was renewed, but IMAP server didn't get restarted to incorporate new cert.
Now the process is scripted. A post renewal script for LetsEncrypt has been added to restart Courier (IMAP)
QUESTION: Do we have any documentation on the overall *automated* process for LetsEncrypt free SSL certificates for websites on BOCK?
Mike Knight is invesigating why SLUUG was being throttled by Google. Possibly something to do with the SLUUG SPF record being regarded as "suspicious" by Google.

newcomer name while posting, despite that it had not been configured.
Got assistance from both Lee L and Chuck Doolittle.
Chuck found misconfiguration after Stan R had altered and reviewed config file 2 dozen going on 3 dozen times.
Stan R is seeing a lot more messages offering to "fix" our sites from hungry contractors.

Meetup.com continually asks if someone wants to start up a Unix/Linux group because of regional interest.
WTF?
Note to Ken: Can he start "Meetup pending Linux group" and then point it to our group?

Individuals that are not signed in with a MEETUP account do NOT see all of our events in the weekly calendar listings when checking for TECH events.
We suspect that it might be keyed to how many signed up folks have indicated that they will be attending.

Apparently we have a Twitter account, we didn't know who did it. Turns out that Lee had created account in 2011. But, that ain't it.

ANNOUNCE Mailing List
SUMMARY: As a historical descendant of our monthly newsletter, the ANNOUNCE mailing had been a weekly extract of our SLUUG GOOGLE Calendar of Events.
Previous editors had also styled it less of 1 liners of the entire calendar and more of abstracts of OUR talks & outstanding interest items.
HISTORY: The subscriber list has been populated from attendance sheets by a nominating subscription process, which requires human input.

Adam R. Motlik in Kansas city is our new potential contact.
RHCSA, Sec+, ITILv3, DCSE
Mobile: 314.266.8048
Gary met him at the Red Hat MeetUp held on Jan 15 at Granite City Brewery on Olive. (near WWT who seems to be a major customer.)
(yyyyyyyyyy was there. He has been to a number of our mtngs and has just changed jobs from Scott AFB to Boeing. Possibly we'll see more of him. Also Jim zzzzzz from Panera Bread. He is manager of a team and has been to a few of our mtngs.)
Adam said that nite that he may become more active with StL, (and particularly SLUUG).
The current contact for the Red Hat MeetUp in StL is <Robert Proffitt ="Monument, CO , Sr. Solution Architect”> who has been the contact for a few years now.
He seems familiar with a couple StL account customers, particularly WWT. He's neevr really seemed interested in co-ordinating w SLUUG. This time he seemed less enthusiastic about the actual mtup then previous trips into town. Perhaps he intends to change his role.
He generally seems to demur any knowledge or active role in organizing it, deferring to:
Crystal Murphy="Raleigh, NC . I manage the Meetup and User Group programs for North America for Red Hat. ",
Nicole Maselli '"Raleigh, NC. Field Marketing Intern. Supports Crystal Murphy on all NA RHUGs and Meetups".
I've talked to one of these ladies in the past. They SAY they will remember to contact us directly as the local group, but they never do. They seem to just be setting up a mtng schedule when told to do so and then tell Robert he needs to be there on that date with a speaker or 3.
Adam in KC followed up with an e-mail to me on Jan 21 saying …
"Please include me on future correspondence regarding SLUGG".
I don't know if there are internal maneuverings or if Adam is just more interested in being involved. There was also a Red Hatter from Chicago and one from southern Missouri (Springfield?) who both also seemed interested that we were having SuSE in town to speak on CEPF and wished they could stay and be at the CEPH talk! All 3 of these guys seem to be more eager to be involved with user groups. (I THINK I have the Chicago name & contact info also. )
Lee (or anyone else) -who else did we have as a contact with Red Hat?
So…for now, nothing official, but Adam & Chicago & South MO would seem to be our most likely/willing contacts.
