Location
Agenda Changes
SUMMARY: This is where we consider any additions, deletions, sequence, or other changes to sequence of items in the prepared agenda.
* HISTORY:
* We consider changes prior to all reviews, planning and OLD BUSINESS items
* by jumping ahead, then back, without altering agenda layout.
* Do not altering agenda layout, during current meeting.
* We will jump to *Old Business* items then back to usual sequence.
* We will jump to *New Business* section, create new item, consider, then jump
* back to usual sequence.
* By not altering agenda layout, it is easier to build next month's agenda.
* Moving a previous item out of sequence made editing difficult.
AGENDA CHANGE:
Are there any additions, deletions, sequence, or other changes to sequence of items in the prepared agenda?

Ed had some technical problems, and felt that he didn't do a good job. Considering problems, we (Stan,James, Dave) consider he did an excellent job.
Dave Forrest and Lee were very impressed with thoroughness and great detail. Gary though despite problems was very worthwhile presentation.

Stan R went back to view video and got more the second time around.
Stan R or somebody caused the recording to stop early.
Harvest aimed at enterprise level. We would have preferred separate meetings on the 3 topics.

NEWLINUX - February 22nd, 2022
SUMMARY:
Previously named Hazelwood LUG (HZWLUG), then Newcomer LUG (NEWLUG). Now, Newcomer Linux User Group is designated as NEWLINUX.
The NEWLINUX home page lists a number of topics to provide general directions from which we could start.
Topics are usually determined by attendees. We usually cover way more than one topic.
NEWLUG was how we named our Linux Users Group (LUG) for Linux Newcomers.
NEWLINUX is name that we can frequently use for our Newcomer Linux Users Group.

Meeting Schedule
SUMMARY: This is where we discuss available and confirmed meeting topics.
GOAL: To map out meeting topics for as much as 3 months out.
No physical face-to-face meetings until further notice.
When we again have physical meetings, we would like to continue video meetings in conjunction with any physical meetings.
We try to track prospects to give presentations at our SLUUG General (SLUUG) meeting and LINUX (STLLINUX) meetings.
We try to segregate topic types as either BASE, MAIN or LINUX, with BASE and MAIN given at the General meeting (SLUUG) .
* *BASE* topics should be oriented toward simpler Personal Computing. Usually given as General meeting (SLUUG). Short is good.
* *MAIN* topics should be oriented more toward advanced or Professional Computing. Usually given at General meeting (SLUUG).
*MAIN* Something more advanced, detailed, important, profound, new, significant, timely or useful.
* *LINUX* topics often could be either at the General meeting or at the St. Louis Linux Users Group (STLLINUX) meetings.
We want to have alternative (secondary) topic on hand if primary speaker doesn't show.
Gary will continue to explore different computer manufacturers (ex: Cray) who might be able to do presentation "Where are they now?"

NEWLINUX - March 22nd, 2022

Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)
Kernel: Linux 4.9.0-14-amd64
Architecture: x86-64
We should consider upgrading to Debian 10 near end of this calendar year.
2021-08-02
We covered it all last month.
2021-08-30
Debian 11, codenamed bullseye, has been released. Maybe we should plan to upgrade from Debian 9 to Debian 10.
Lee highly recommends upgrading to Debian 10 first, before going to Debian 11.
2021-10-04
Lee added extra 50, then 150
GB to MEDIA. Total of 200
GB, however system won't yet recognize, won't extend partition table.
2021-11-01 comments:
We need to insure that James C. is added to SysAdmin email list.
Lee resolved the partition extended file system issue, built upon Mike Knights finding error.
Possible upgrade of Debian 9 to 10 come December or later.
2021-11-29 Comments:
Mike Knight pointed out lots of multiple login failures from Red Chinese bots, idendtified potental Fail2Ban filters.
Lee then added Fail2ban jail and filter for SMTP login failures.
Lee listed fail2ban stats results in chat:
# f2bstat
Current Total Total
Jail Banned Banned Failed
--------------------------------------
dovecot 0 163 8669
postfix 0 0 101
postfix-failedauth 1 750 13826
sshd 0 0 0
--------------------------------------
Some discussion of significance was attempted. Gary questioned relationship of Total Banned to Total Failed.
2022-01-10 Comments:
Debian 9 “Stretch” End of Life is scheduled to be June 30, 2022.
Debian 11 has been released.
Debian 10 should be next target.
2022-01-31 Comments:
Lee and Mike Knight upgraded to Debian 10 on Friday 21st. No trauma, only minor issue with BIND directory permissions..
Stan R having intermitten problem accessing IMAP mail. Previously was able to sign in concurrently multiple times. Now, sometimes can not.
Lee has increased IMAP connection count to 15 in DoveCot.
Lee recommends waiting a year before moving up to Debian 11 release.

Comments in above indicate major browsers have dropped support for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 in CYR 2020.
All we might have to do, would be remove support for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1. This might be what caps us to B rating.
The link above seemed to show what to do. Read the link Gary, but not now.
2021-08-30 comments about August:
Stan R combined all daily calendar occurrences of 4 or more historical events into one display item.
Stan R added descriptive narratives on SLUUG General site comparing BASE and MAIN topics:
BASE: Something fundamental, introductory, instructive or simple.
MAIN: Something more advanced, detailed, important, profound, new, significant, timely or useful.
Stan R aligned the SLACC and NEWLINUX starting times on the SLUUG Google calendar to 1800 hrs.
The other meeting start times were already aligned to 1800 hrs.
The 1800 hrs time allows lead time of camera and microphone testing for remote sessions.
Informal discussion during set up time beneficial; however, we should continue designating a formal start of meeting.
There was significant interesting discussion prior to STLLINUX regular start time.

Mike Knight raising issues about off site backup. We lack band width, 15 Mb per second up to run backups. More than we have externally at other end.
Mike Knight found Fail2Ban problems are reoccurring.

Discussion:
Gary M virtual remote experience at 2600 club was not good. They did not have splitter for hybrid session.
Lee figures harder, quite difficult, do we want to really do it. How do we do recordings?
Stan R says local noise too much at restaurants.
Head counts need to be considered. Gary once shared ZOOM participant panel. We need to promote sharing participant panel(s) for count heads.
Stan R has less problem using Jitsi.
Stan R thought Jitsi does not have built in recording (may not be true).
Stan R uses Linux SimpleScreenRecorder (SSR) to record all remote sessions. Specifically activates participant panel while recording sessions with SSR.
We must consider when will libraries open up. Also, Siemens, Nick and Elena's restaurant.
Gary suggests we move this topic earlier in agenda. We don't expect to make much progress right away; but, need to keep in mind.

Attendance Data
SUMMARY: Attendance head count tracking for member voting qualification during Calendar Year (CY)
2021-11-01 comments for October:
Remote attendee names for the Calendar Year up thru September had been collected in a LibreOffice (LO) Calc spreadsheet.
Names from that LO Calc spreadsheet have been transferred into a rudimentary LibreOffice BASE Attendance database.
All names for the Calendar Year to date, are now in the LO BASE Attendance database. Currently the file is 86 Kb in size.
Anticipate that we will have to work more with the Attendance database to figure out how to make it more useful.
2021-11-29 Comments for December:
Nothing specified as new business during session; but, mention was made of this.
Stan R has moved all data captured in spread sheets to a flat database.
Input is a bit awkward; but, way better than spread sheet input.

Speed of transfer improvements with using SSH public keys with upload script working considerably faster.
Anticipated availability of remote Firebase conversion in LibreOffice BASE has been delayed because of problems.
FireBird embedded database creation put back to experimental considering the number of bugs.
Other possibilities.
2021-03-01 * General review and discussion.
2021-04-05
Good idea to do a BASE presentation to entire organization to introduce it to all.
Another thing for Stan to do.
LibreOffice BASE backed off on using Firebase RMDB because of bugs. So, still can not have multiple users at same time.
2021-05-03 * With use the terminology is getting smoother and more efficient.
2021-06-02 * Good tool, Stan R has put a lot of time into. The "status" terminology continues to evolve. Hopefully for the better.

One of the recordings we uploaded failed 10 minutes in, even though it said
it was all there. Had to reupload to server. In future, must check that full
file has been uploaded by jumping all the way to the end.
2021-07-05
Found that we had not uploaded and linked (because of misconfiguration
as MKV) Bryce Meyer's STLLINUX Using Open Tools to Sell Your Art video
session from August 2020. Uploaded and linked.
Discovered that Open HandBreak can by default convert MKV files to MP4. It does,
however, even on 16GB workstation take full playback time to process the conversion.
The STLLINUX CEPH File System Followup by Michael Carringon and Uyuni
Project by Patrick Swarts from September 2020 needed to be converted
from MKV to MP4, upload and linked for useable access. Uploaded and linked.
We finally finished video processing (using the "Shotcut" video editor to
blur some scenes) required within Scott Graneman's BASE 1Password session.
Accidental and unexpected transitions had shown some of his passwords.
Even though he had changed any compromises, it seemed a better idea to
not show anything questionable.
This was combined with Steven Lembark's MAIN The Raku (Perl 6) Language
session from March 2021. Uploaded and linked.
We called attention to the BASE "1Password" video portion in a DISCUSS
posting, without highlighting the processing delay.
Found that we had uploaded James Conroy's BASE Create Your Own Shell
Function session, combined with Steven Borrelli's MAIN COSI (a new
API)
session from April 2021; but, had failed to link on web page. Uploaded and linked.
Also we had not uploaded and linked DeWayne Hughes's STLLINUX IBM Z and
LinuxOne video session from April 2021. Uploaded and linked.
Despite all of these delays, failures and mistakes, we received no complaints
that things were missing. Not even from the presenters. Currently we have
no way of knowing if or when anyone views these recordings. Would be nice to know;
but, we don't have staffing to explore expanding Webalizer nor YouTube at this time.

Gary wants to get with Stan to install LinuxMint MATE on at least one laptop.
One box missing battery. All may work better with 32 bit distros. Likely all low performance boxes.
Gary should coordinate with Leo on doing an installation on one more of the boxes.
Stan offered to do it remotely using GITSO remote software connection.
Today Stan R has been using Ventoy to boot multiple ISOs from single USB thumb drive.
Stan R successfully tested with a dozen ISOs. Ventoy is known to work with 200 plus ISOs.

Stan worked with Gary to put LinuxMint MATE 20.x on one of the machines.
Stan gave Gary a Ventoy thumb drive. Ventoy thumb drives are not perfectly reliable. Depends on target machine and BIOS/EIFEIOU crap.
2021-08-30 * Gary still has two box to distribute.
2021-10-04 * Gary still has two boxes staring at him. Looking forward to helping one female user.

We Need Help
SUMMARY: We don't have enough volunteers to do everything consistently.
HISTORY: We need new members who want to do stuff. Same as every month.
Tyler Rudie had volunteered to help with SLUUG Google calendar input.
Gary, Stan, & Tyler need to get together to review Tyler getting to work on Google Calendar modifications?
Tyler Rudie has been granted permissions to help with SLUUG Google calendar input. Not yet given guidance or instructions.
Gary needs to prompt him.
QUESTION: Any new volunteers to help?

We will need new LUG chair, James Conroy (not James Conway) will be moving to new job in Texas.
Gary has been remiss in bringing Tyler up to speed on doing Calendar maintenance.
