    • WHAT: AWK and sed Power Tools
    • BY: James Conroy
    • SYNOPSIS: Something on AWK
    • WRANGLER: Gary
    • ABSTRACT: Yes
      • This will be an intro to the Power Tools of Unix Text Manipulation.
      • One of the best things about Unix and Unix like systems is the ability to pipe and redirect plain text from one program to another.
      • Using built in commands you can do many operations such as sorting, counting lines and search for strings in outputs.
      • But what if you want to do more complicated processes, or do these operates on a massive file?
      • That is where the power tools come in. Much as a carpenter has an assortment of tools ranging from hand saws for detail work to lathes, we have access to the power tools of the text processing world.
      • AWK and sed are the power tools of the plain text world. They are able to do massive and complex actions that would take forever by hand.
    • BIO: Yes
    • REMARKS: To Be Rescheduled: ( PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED, BUT NOT DONE ) James had agreed to do November; but, offer by Mo came up. We'd like not to burn out James; so, delayed.

    • WHAT: CEPH File System
    • BY: Michael Carrington of SuSE (Kansas City)
    • SYNOPSIS:
      • Exact Title To Be Determined (TBD)
      • CEPH is a distributed network file system designed to provide excellent performance, reliability, and scalability. CEPH is such a underutilized and misunderstood concept.
      • I would like to present something like Why CEPH is a skill set that every Unix admin should learn.
      • I can fully bet out the title to be * a little more creative. I don’t want to sell SUSE and SUSE Enterprise Storage, but more of convince Unix admins why a CEPH skill set will be worthwhile in acquiring. Thoughts?

      • CEPH Distributed Network File System
    • COMMENTS:
      • Stan R kept expecting to eventually see the nuts and bolts, "Where's the BEEF"?
        • Never fully explained concepts of how CEPH was using objects and metadata.
        • Only memorable point was that at least three servers were necessary to function.
      • Gary M threw out a number of questions trying to extract a more technical presentation.

    • We always want to have alternative topics on hand if primary speaker doesn't show.
    • BASE should be oriented toward simpler Personal Computing. MAIN should be oriented more toward advanced or Enterprise Computing.

Old Business

Server Admin

SUMMARY: We put up a server on the Internet for email, it grew, and now we have to maintain it.

  • Minutes narratives prior to 2019 have been removed.
  • 2019-01-02 MINUTES AND CHANGES TO AGENDA FOR THIS MONTH WERE LOST IN SERVER ACCIDENT!
    • Lee Lammert and Mike Knight working on SpamAssassin. Extensive plan developed by Mike Knight.
    • QUESTION (Stan): Do we have to worry about losing ownership of the stllug.org domains?
    • ANSWER
  • 2019-02-04
    • Lee: Everything's up and running thanks to Mike. New topic: DCC. What is it? Lee has no clue.

    • Lee: It's running. Updates posted.
  • 2019-07-01
    • Lee: no updates this month. ClamAV & SpamAssassin are running, SA is giving scores, but up to user to decide what to do with them.
    • Gary: good that things are running, but would be nice to get a presentation on what is there and what it does. Would be good for everyone to realize what's been done to make things work.

    • Continuing to work as expected, limping along.
    • Meetup.com continually asks if someone wants to start up a Unix/Linux group because of regional interest. WTF?

  • 2019-12-30 (for January 2020)

ANNOUNCE Mailing List

SUMMARY: As a historical descendant of our monthly newsletter, the ANNOUNCE mailing had been a weekly extract of our SLUUG GOOGLE Calendar of Events. Previous editors had also styled it less of 1 liners of the entire calendar and more of abstracts of OUR talks & outstanding interest items.

  • HISTORY: The subscriber list has been populated from attendance sheets by a nominating subscription process, which requires human input.
  • Minutes narratives prior to 2019 have been removed.

  • 2019-08-05
  • 2019-08-28 Stan thinks we should spend less time displaying our Google calendar and show off our mailing list archives so as to encourage attendees to sign up during meetings. Relying on hand written adresses added to attendance sheets not super positive.
  • 2019-09-30 (for October)
  • 2019-11-04
    • Stan had problems getting into Announce list because email system has been bogged down lately. Mailing lists are being processed much more slowly than normal.

      • Difficult to modify, as it is extremely graphically intense. Built and modified with the Scribus application.
      • Likely too complex to print, may wind up splitting content to make a slide show presentation.
