Agenda Changes

SUMMARY: This is where we consider any additions, deletions, sequence, or other changes to sequence of items in the prepared agenda.

  * HISTORY:
  * We consider changes prior to all reviews, planning and OLD BUSINESS items
    * by jumping ahead, then back, without altering agenda layout.
  * Do not altering agenda layout, during current meeting.
  * We will jump to *Old Business* items then back to usual sequence.
  * We will jump to *New Business* section, create new item, consider, then jump
    * back to usual sequence.
  * By not altering agenda layout, it is easier to build next month's agenda.
  * Moving a previous item out of sequence made editing difficult.
  • AGENDA CHANGE:
  • Are there any additions, deletions, sequence, or other changes to sequence of items in the prepared agenda?

Calendar Report

SUMMARY: We maintain a calendar of technical events in the Greater St. Louis area and surrounding regions.

  * HISTORY:
  * Not all events are official/sponsored SLUUG events. All sponsored events are shown in red.
  * Items have been added and corrected by Stan R, Gary Meyer and Don Ellis.
  * Items listed on this calendar were used to feed the ANNOUNCE weekly mailing.
  * Events on HIATUS are NOT counted! Historical items are NOT counted!
  * Only face-to-face meetings were counted!
  • SLUUG Calendar is a Google Calendar available on our web site.

  * Count of calendar entries for May is down from previous months. No explanation is given.
  * Count of calendar entries for March 2020 misleading because of
  * Limited maintenance effort for March 2020 because CORONAVIRUS-19 self-isolation effects.
  * Started counting **moved** and **delayed** items in April 2020 as considered being useful.
  * Improvements in Google Calendar feature limits to five days processing at at time, takes
    * about 10 times as long to perform counting. Much more tedious.
  * Five day limitation "improvement" gone, no longer takes so much longer to count.
  • 2022-01-31 Comments about January:
    • Of the 210 total, 5 were cancelled (x~), 0 defunct, 6 delayed, and 4 moved, and 0 postponed; so, leaving 195 active.
  • 2022-02-28 Comments for March:
    • Of the 219 total, 6 were cancelled, 34 (x~), 0 defunct, 10 delayed, and 3 moved, and 1 postponed; so, leaving 165 active.
  • 2022-04-04 Comments:
    • The February Calendar counts were not entered during the last meeting.
    • Of the 244 total, 1 were cancelled, 37 (x~), 0 defunct, 7 delayed, 1 missed, and 4 moved, and 1 postponed; so, leaving 193 active.
  • 2022-05-02 Comments:
    • Of the 219 total, 2 were cancelled, 44 (x~), 0 defunct, 5 delayed, 1 missed, and 5 moved, and 1 postponed; so, leaving 161 active.
    • QUESTION: Why was March 2022 count so much larger, while April dropped?
    • QUESTION: Should we replace the monthly total counts (January 2022 to date) entries with the active counts?
      • The total counts indicate how many entries we made, showing our work effort, and potential meetings; but, not actual meetings held.
      • Would be a lot of work (if even possible) to go back to change 2020 counts.
      • The active counts would be more realistic indication of how many actual meetings were held.
    • Suggest doing at, say, 1 July or 1 January.

  • 2022-02-28 Comments for March:
    • Per Gary looking at last 4 years, DISCUSS slow rebuilding very slowly, ANNOUNCE rebuilt about 10 to 16 people, from large loss of about 100.
    • ANNOUNCE used to be monthly newsletter, then Stan R used it for a weekly highlite. Now mostly just to spread ZOOM and JITSI links.
  • 2022-04-04 Comments: Very little change from last month. Amazing how many are in MEETUP and we only see a few.

SLACC - July 7th, 2022

    • Usually holds a Linux Workshop offering installation and configuration help - no presentation
  • 2022-08-01 Comments:
    • SLCL opened up reservations on 2 July.
    • Stan R reserved rooms July thru December for both SLACC (at Thornhill) and NEWLUG (at Rock Road).
    • Stan R hosted this SLACC remote Jitsi session. Two relatively new participants showed up
    • Phil Bunch and Gary McKee staffed the live face-to-face physical SLACC meeting at Thornhill Branch.
    • Phil Bunch connected his laptop to the remote Jitsi session by WiFi; but, was dropped off about half a dozen times.
    • There may be possible significant WiFi issues, as there seems to be no wired Ethernet access available at library branches.
    • Live-in-person attendance at SLACC was miniscule. One individual brought in machine seeking help. His problem was
    • solved, and it was one that we could not have resolved remotely because of UEIF boot and GRUB boot loader conflicts.
    • Two interested people came in; but, were there less than 5 minutes each.
    • Phil Bunch was not encouraged by poor live attendance. Future use of library rooms will be reviewed monthly.

    • he fails to grasp the techniques. Considering the participation, this session was apparently quite interesting for those
    • that seemed already comfortable and experienced with using "git". Stan R just this month finished watching 7 hours of videos
    • by ITpro.TV team on "git Version Control" and still doesn't "GET IT". Stan R believes that only real actual participation with
    • a real project development team would bring him to a useful level of understanding.

NEWLINUX - July 26th, 2022

SUMMARY: Previously named Hazelwood LUG (HZWLUG), then Newcomer LUG (NEWLUG). Now, Newcomer Linux User Group is designated as NEWLINUX. The NEWLINUX home page lists a number of topics to provide general directions from which we could start. Topics are usually determined by attendees. We usually cover way more than one topic.

  • NEWLUG was how we named our Linux Users Group (LUG) for Linux Newcomers.
    • NEWLINUX is name that we can frequently use for our Newcomer Linux Users Group.
  • 2022-08-01 Comments:
    • Future use of library rooms will be reviewed monthly.
    • Stan R cancelled July face-to-face Rock Road Library Branch reservation and only held remote Jitsi session.
    • Phil Bunch saw announcement; but, forgot to attend. Stan R should have made a reminder call. If we all called at least one
    • other member right before each meeting, that might encourage more participation.

Meeting Schedule

SUMMARY: This is where we discuss available and confirmed meeting topics. GOAL: To map out meeting topics for as much as 3 months out.

  • No physical face-to-face meetings until further notice.
  • When we again have physical meetings, we would like to continue video meetings in conjunction with any physical meetings.
  • We try to track prospects to give presentations at our SLUUG General (SLUUG) meeting and LINUX (STLLINUX) meetings.
  • We try to segregate topic types as either BASE, MAIN or LINUX, with BASE and MAIN given at the General meeting (SLUUG) .
  • * *BASE* topics should be oriented toward simpler Personal Computing. Usually given as General meeting (SLUUG). Short is good.
    • *BASE* Something fundamental, introductory, instructive or simple.
  • * *MAIN* topics should be oriented more toward advanced or Professional Computing. Usually given at General meeting (SLUUG).
    • *MAIN* Something more advanced, detailed, important, profound, new, significant, timely or useful.
  • * *LINUX* topics often could be either at the General meeting or at the St. Louis Linux Users Group (STLLINUX) meetings.
  • We want to have alternative (secondary) topic on hand if primary speaker doesn't show.
  • Gary will continue to explore different computer manufacturers (ex: Cray) who might be able to do presentation "Where are they now?"

    • Debian 10 should be next target.

    • Lee and Mike Knight upgraded to Debian 10 on Friday 21st. No trauma, only minor issue with BIND directory permissions..

    • Sean Twiehaus and James Conroy collaborated on front page design and submitted HTML code.
    • Stan R incorporated most of submitted HTML and with Ed Howland modified red JS navbar header, dropping needless "Membership" drop down.
    • So far Stan R is keeping our traditional red and powder blue colors at top of page. There may be further changes or improvements.
    • What's wrong with all powder blue? Just curious, is it a matter of performance, philosophy, or preference?

Hybrid Meetings

SUMMARY: Combine recording physical plus remote meetings

  * HISTORY:
      * We have for the longest time been saying:
      * **No physical face-to-face meetings until further notice.**
      * When we again have physical meetings, we would like to continue video meetings in conjunction with any physical meetings.

    • Discussion:
      • Gary M virtual remote experience at 2600 club was not good. They did not have splitter for hybrid session.
      • Lee figures harder, quite difficult, do we want to really do it. How do we do recordings?
      • Stan R says local noise too much at restaurants.
      • Head counts need to be considered. Gary once shared ZOOM participant panel. We need to promote sharing participant panel(s) for count heads.
      • Stan R has less problem using Jitsi.
      • Stan R thought Jitsi does not have built in recording (may not be true).
      • Stan R uses Linux SimpleScreenRecorder (SSR) to record all remote sessions. Specifically activates participant panel while recording sessions with SSR.
      • We must consider when will libraries open up. Also, Siemens, Nick and Elena's restaurant.
      • Gary suggests we move this topic earlier in agenda. We don't expect to make much progress right away; but, need to keep in mind.
  • 2021-08-02 * Lee and Tyler still to combine efforts.

    • Stan R still has one of the projectors.

  • 2022-02-28 Comments for March:
    • No progress. We SHOULD seek volunteers on DISCUSS to work on audio technique.
    • https://officehours.global has professional daily audio and visual experts.
  • 2022-04-04 Comments:
    • Both Gary and Stan R have remotely attended STL2600 club meetings. Their hybrid meeting attempt was of extremely poor quality.
    • Stan R thinks hybrid meetings would require separate production efforts. Live attendance sheets and remote attendance efforts.
    • Gary believes by-laws specify attendance taking for vote qualification. We might consider changing by-laws.
    • Lee seconds that we need a real good microphone (not condenser).
  • 2022-05-02 Comments:
    • Gary suggested ZoomPhobics grab their tablet ahd have a beer at Nick & Elena's.
