Agenda Changes

  • Are there any additions, deletions, sequence, or other changes to sequence of items in the prepared agenda?
  • 2020-10-05
  • NEW BUSINESS: We should immediately consider the elimination of Back-To-Back Meetings.
    • Suggest we consider this change prior to all reviews, planning and OLD BUSINESS items by jumping ahead, then back, without altering agenda layout.
    • By not altering agenda layout, it would be easier to build next month's agenda. Moving a previous item out of sequence made editing difficult.
    • :?:
  • NEW BUSINESS: Any other new business?
    • :?:

Secretary Report

  • 2020-10-05
    • The meeting is in progress
    • Add to New Business discussion of switching from Wiki to Google Docs.

Meeting Schedule

SUMMARY * We try to track prospects to give presentations at our SLUUG General (SLUUG) meeting and LINUX (STLLUG) meetings.

  • We try to segregate topic types as either BASE, MAIN or LINUX, with BASE and MAIN given at the General meeting (SLUUG) .
  • BASE topics should be oriented toward simpler Personal Computing. Usually given as General meeting (SLUUG). Short is good.
  • MAIN topics should be oriented more toward advanced or Enterprise Computing. Usually given at General meeting (SLUUG).
  • LINUX topics could be either at the General meeting or at the St. Louis Linux Users Group (STLLUG) meetings.
  • We always want to have alternative topics on hand if primary speaker doesn't show.
  • Gary will continue to explore different computer manufacturers (ex: Cray) who might be able to do presentation "Where are they now?"

      • First Thursday of October. One of our senior members (Norm Miller) had lost use of machine previous week. He called Phil Bunch and Stan. Attempted to fix it, included Ed Howland. Got the system to log in previous weekend. WiFi drivers had been erased. Phil went in and got the WiFi working. Demonstrated that there's only so much you can do if you don't have access, and presence of keyboard prompts additional ideas.
      • Mint had just released notes announcing that a previous version had disabled login. Discussed in Forum, but user had to know to go to the forum to find out about it, but had to log in to be able to attend Forum. Another user (Don Wieman) had similar problem and was also helped.
      • This represents a major SLACC event, helping two elderly Linux users who had been locked out, not having knowledge of how to search for the solution, and lacking ability to log on and search for the solution.
    • Special thanks go out to Stan, Phil, Ed, and Gary McKee for contributing to the community.
    • Also:
      • Gary suggested:
        • Nathan had problems with HBO no longer being supported in Linux. Was able to get it to run in WINE.

Server Admin

SUMMARY: We put up a server on the Internet for email, it grew, and now we have to maintain it.

  • *Minutes narratives prior to 2020 have been removed.*
  • 2019-12-30 (for January 2020)
    • Christmas Day SLUUG certificate would not work with securing email. Did not disrupt web site availability, nor remote SSH access. Mike Knight and Craig Bucheck tackled problem.
    • Successful test completed in September, will repeat in December
  • 2020-02-03
    • Our *automated* LetsEncrypt free SSL certificates for websites on BOCK test was successfully completed in September, was to be repeated in December.
      • There was a problem Christmas Day with SLUUG certificate holding up email.
      • QUESTION: Was this related?
        • Mike Knight created and tested some scripts dealing with our LetsEncrypt setup.
      • QUESTION: Do we know what happened with SLUUG certificate not working with securing the email on Christmas Day?
        • Certificate had expired, was renewed, but IMAP server didn't get restarted to incorporate new cert.
        • Now the process is scripted. A post renewal script for LetsEncrypt has been added to restart Courier (IMAP)
      • QUESTION: Do we have any documentation on the overall *automated* process for LetsEncrypt free SSL certificates for websites on BOCK?
    • Mike Knight is investigating why SLUUG was being throttled by Google. Possibly something to do with the SLUUG SPF record being regarded as "suspicious" by Google.
  • 2020-03-02
  • 2020-03-30 (for April)
  • 2020-05-04
    • QUESTION: Do we have any documentation on the overall *automated* process for LetsEncrypt free SSL certificates for websites on BOCK?
# cat /etc/cron.daily/checkcert
#!/bin/bash

#MAILTO=""

/usr/bin/certbot renew
  • Automated renewal system crashed Christmas day 2019 and didn't recover. Mike has adjusted it to work properly and it appears to work as of March 2020; appears to have worked for June instance.
  • 2020-06-01
  • Lee said limited bandwidth of transfers was issue as to where we would put recordings.
  • Mike Knight is investigating why SLUUG was being throttled by Google. Possibly something to do with the SLUUG SPF record being regarded as "suspicious" by Google.
    • Mike? Answer?
  • 2020-06-29 for July
  • 2020-08-03
  • 2020-08-31 for September
    • Lee: Server performance should be substantially improved because of new fiber installation in Bat Cave
  • 2020-10-05
    • Mike: Alerted us to broken SLUUG Members Page.
      • Stan: Legacy of something Stan thought had already been done but hadn't
    • Mike: Alerted us to transient failure of SpamAssassin rules download, rerun OK.
      • Gary: Apparently it's ok now.

Web Site SLUUG.ORG Maintenance

SUMMARY: We have a traditional Internet presence with the existence of our main SLUUG web site.

  • *Minutes narratives prior to 2020 have been removed.*
  • 2019-12-30 (for January 2020)
  • 2020-02-03
    • Stan R, did routine updating of home pages. Had no time for sorely needed cleanup, documentation, improvements, nor anything else.
    • Stan R, still needs to put election notice with Ballot2020.pdf up on websites.
  • 2020-03-02
  • 2020-03-30 (for April)
  • 2020-05-04
    • Stan tried doing website maintenance via smartphone; Google calendar got messed up; don't try editing with smartphone
    • Stan: SLACC and NewLUG meeting websites have been done for May
  • 2020-06-01
    • Changes to SLUUG Wiki home page, see https://wiki.sluug.org/home/
      • Corrected the expected meeting schedule of the Steering Committee from Wednesday to Monday.
      • A line with two new links has been added:
        • The STEERCOM looks at *POTENTIAL* items in an attempt to provide *PLANNING* of future meeting dates, locations, and topics.
        • The *POTENTIAL* page information has been moved to the Planning Database and the page narrative is being merged into the *PLANNING* page and will then be next removed after this STEERCOM meeting.
      • The link to the obsolete calendar Events item is being deleted and is being replaced with a more current reference to our SLUUG Google Calendar.
    • Many of the other stanzas link to obsolete or incomplete wiki pages. Much of this is very misleading to anyone new that hasn't been around for years and accustomed to ignoring the mess.
  • 2020-06-29 for July
    • Lee has added another 50G partition on Bock under /srv/media/
    • Please move all media files to this new partition.
  • 2020-08-03
  • 2020-08-31 for September
    • Stan: No progress
  • 2020-10-05
    • Stan: No action taken to fix broken SLUUG Members Page pointed out by Mike Knight.
      • Stan: There is no link to the Members Page.
      • Lee: Why not rename the Members Page so any bookmarks to it are broken.
      • Gary mentioned article about CloudFlare and how to be sure our pages get onto the WayBack machine. Requires further investigation.

Web Site MEETUP.COM Maintenance

SUMMARY: We have presence on MEETUP.COM.

  • *Minutes narratives prior to 2020 have been removed.*
  • 2019-12-30 (for January 2020)
    • All NEWLUG entries for 2020 had to be created. Might have been because of wrong end date.
  • 2020-02-03
    • Individuals that are not signed in with a MEETUP account do NOT see all of our events in the weekly calendar listings when checking for TECH events.
    • We suspect that it might be keyed to how many signed up folks have indicated that they will be attending.
  • 2020-03-02
    • For Don: be sure we get info for March Wednesday meeting into Meetup.
  • 2020-03-30 (for April)
  • 2020-05-04
  • 2020-06-01
    • Items were edited to point to individual home web page for connection instructions to video remote conferencing to meetings.
    • This was done so that only one site needed to be updated.
    • Apparently we did have at least one guy that could not follow instructions and complained that he couldn't connect.
    • This was done so that only one site needed to be updated. Apparently we did have at least one guy that could not follow instructions and complained that he couldn't connect.
  • 2020-06-29 for July
  • 2020-08-03
  • 2020-08-31 for September
    • Gary: Stan suggested not putting streamer links in Meetup; go to our website for the links! (Save maintenance time & effort)
  • 2020-10-05
    • As usual Gary agrees with Stan that Meetup sucks. Lee: It's a wonder how much Meetup charges for stuff that sucks.

  • *Minutes narratives prior to 2020 have been removed.*
  • 2019-12-30 (for January 2020)
    • Gary had asked Terry to invite people to our meetings via LinkedIn.
    • QUESTION Are there any numbers we can gather to measure MASTODON or LinkedIn coverage? ANSWER: We don't know yet, process too nebulous, so far.
    • Apparently we have a Twitter account, we didn't know who did it. Turns out that Lee had created account in 2011. But, that ain't it.
  • 2020-02-03
    • QUESTION for Terry Linhardt ~ Terry was going to check. Did he find out who set up Twitter account?
    • Terry never got feedback from those he asked.

  • 2020-08-03
  • 2020-08-31 for September
    • Everyone think if there's anyone we can hit up to sponsor meeting platform software i.e. Zoom, Webex, Google, etc
    • Note that Webex doesn't allow hosting from Linux, i.e. master console, responsible for controlling session, sharing screen, etc.
  • 2020-10-05
    • Gary: Can we get some sponsor interested in closed captioning to help elderly and/or hearing impaired to pay for [CC] in our Zoom account?

ANNOUNCE Mailing List

SUMMARY: As a historical descendant of our monthly newsletter, the ANNOUNCE mailing had been a weekly extract of our SLUUG GOOGLE Calendar of Events. Previous editors had also styled it less of 1 liners of the entire calendar and more of abstracts of OUR talks & outstanding interest items.

  • HISTORY: The subscriber list has been populated from attendance sheets by a nominating subscription process, which requires human input.
  • Minutes narratives prior to 2020 have been removed.
  • 2020-06-29 for July

  • 2020-10-05
    • Don still needs to test Stan's database on Libreoffice on Mac. Everyone else should test the database on their own systems.

    • Lee ordered printer parts that should correct krinkle problem.
  • 2020-02-03
    • Stan R has been modifying a Linux Presentation Day from 2015 found on the Internet. It has excellent content.
      • Difficult to modify, as it is extremely graphically intense. Built and modified with the Scribus application.
      • Likely too complex to print, may wind up splitting content to make a slide show presentation.
  • 2020-03-02
    • Lee: If anybody needs handouts, send me a PDF and a quantity.

  • 2020-10-05
    • Gary & Stan have to get more active with Tyler or someone working on the calendar.

Alternative Remote Video Conferencing Services

SUMMARY: We don't want to constantly rely on someone else's ZOOM capability and want something with closed captioning ability.

  • HISTORY: We have mostly been using DELL's ZOOM sessions.
  • 2020-05-04
    • Lee visited Chicago LUG - using Big Blue Button (BBB)
      • BBB records separate audio, visual, and presentation files.
      • How to download recording from server and combine streams into single video stream
      • Maybe set up Big Blue Button (BBB) on different hostname for testing
  • 2020-06-01
    • Lee has set up BBB server. Issues with separate recordings Display, Audio and Whiteboard.
    • Stan suggested some frequent weekly testing of alternate Remote Video Conferencing Service packages
  • 2020-06-29 for July
    • Lee: Jitsi has progressed amazingly the past few months. If Firefox can be kept off, it works pretty well.
      • Jitsi End to end encryption is being developed, may be ready for use at this time.
    • Gary: Encourage Dave to continue to investigate captioning for various screen sharing platforms.
  • 2020-08-03
  • 2020-08-31 for September
    • Big Blue Button wasn't fully developed. Allows uploading presentation, limited usefulness.
    • Zoom labels statements by speaker, Jitsi doesn't
    • Webex is non-starter, can't host from Linux.
    • Zoom may be $20/mo, plus $20/mo for [cc]
    • Chad is our single point of service for Zoom. Need to find another company to give us our own account, or a sponsor to pay $40/month for Zoom plus [cc].
    • Stan: Maybe Microsoft would be willing to sponsor us?
    • Lee: Google doesn't have non-profit version we could use.
  • 2020-10-05
    • StanR: Attended today's Jitsi developer monthly open session. Developers claim Firefox is no longer a problem. I don't believe it. No easy way to verify.
    • StanR: The LinuxMint team announced on 2 October that they will package Chromium browser (ETA unknown). Will make it easier for LinuxMint users to install.
    • LEE: Jitsi is available, …though we need to decide about switching to Zoom basic before mid month/
      • That's the renewal on the VPS hosting Jitsi - if we want to switch to Zoom, would like to do it before another charge.

Attendance and Voting

SUMMARY: Sheltering in Place precludes use of physical attendance sheets

  • HISTORY: Our attendance records were used to determine qualification to vote in our annual February balloting.
  • 2020-06-01
    • Gary M. posted background and issues to STEERCOM mailing list.
    • 2020-05-28 Subject: Election voter rolls
    • No physical meetings until further notice, we can not use attendance sheets.
    • We expect that remote participation should qualify as attendance.
    • Therefore we need to record and count remote participation as qualifying attendance.
    • Further we need to develop process for voting at our annual February meeting.
  • 2020-06-01
  • 2020-06-29 for July
    • If one of us remembers during the meeting, take a snapshot of the participant list. Experiment with viewing the recording and see if the participant list is available.

    • Stan R wants to know how we should record attendance once we have combined meetings? Listing both physical and remote numbers might be difficult within this wiki layout.
    • Gary: Since we don't pass around a signup sheet, we don't tell people how their attendance is being recorded. Stan reviews the video and copies the attendee list.
    • Stan: This whole topic can be put up on Discuss list, giving the procedure.
    • Gary: The masses need to see how the sausage is made.

Eliminate Back-To-Back Meetings

SUMMARY: Stop any potential Back-To-Back meetings

  • HISTORY: During some months the 2nd Wednesday SLUUG meeting is immediately followed the next day by 3rd Thursday STLLUG meeting.
  • 2020-10-05
    • Gary M. posted background and some issues to STEERCOM mailing list.
    • We have had some folks grumble that “2 meetings in 2 days is too great a time drain.”
      • They’d prefer meetings in different week.
    • We have always said that it would be “nice” to have 2-part meetings that were so long they would stretch into a 2nd evening.
      • However, I think we have only taken advantage of that a couple times.
    • An additional week would allow more time to find the next presentation for the STLLUG meeting.
    • Gary spoke with Ken Johnson. Ken concurs that the change won't cause disruption
  • By vote, the committee resolved to eliminate back to back meetings from this month forward.

Switch to Zoom from Jitsi

  • Lee already has a Zoom account. Very economical.
    • Lee will make arrangements when he's figured out the details, especially [CC].
    • Target date is mid month.

Anything Else

  • Do we have anything else new to deal with?
  • 2020-10-05
    • Gary: two items
      • Sunday night he returned and found cardboard box with old secretary material. Original Xeroxes of articles of corporation, etc. Historical interest. No idea who dropped it off.
      • Recommend/suggest that any of us look at calendar. Tomorrow (10/6) Red Hat Seminar. Free food again? Be sure to let them know that SLUUG people are at the meeting.
      • Consider a trial of editing the minutes in Google Docs. Stan suggests using vim or emacs. Further investigation.

Recognize Useful Efforts

SUMMARY: When anybody does something to help!

  • QUESTION: Did anyone do anything helpful or useful?
  • 2020-10-05
    • Stan: Nobody did anything this month. Everything was automatic. Usual suspects were rounded up. With special exception at October SLACC meeting.
    • Special thanks go out to Stan, Phil, Ed, and Gary McKee for contributing to the community.

Follow-up and Action Items

SUMMARY: It may help a little to tag individuals with tasks:

  • Everyone - Review the STEERCOM minutes, make corrections, act!

SUMMARY: Food for thought ~ anything not previously covered that provides mental stimulus for thinking about improvements or solutions.

  • HISTORY: Stimulate creativity by planting the seed of an idea. Current action or response not required.
    • Some ideas are Off-The-Record ~ NOT TO BE RECORDED!
    • Some ideas should be publicized.~ SHOULD BE RECORDED!
    • If a speaker believes something should not be recorded, the record operator needs to be notified.
    • Each speaker should initially declare whether an idea should be recorded or not.
  • 2020-08-31 for September
    • Skies have been especially blue for this time of year, when not unusually cloudy.
    • Stan: Consider moving Blue Skies to after adjournment, so it would take place after formal end of meeting and would not be video recorded.
