SLACC - September 1

  • SLACC usually holds a Linux configuration workshop - no presentation
    • GOOD STUFF!! Andrew showing stuff he does in network trouble shooting. DNS. RSNAPSHOT (has to see tabs).

LABOR DAY - September 5

STEERCOM - Steering Committee - September 5

SLUUG - September 14

    • BASE: Upgrade Vim to First-Class Status by Bill Odom
    • What's in your Vim status line? You know, that line of reversed-video text at the bottom of your Vim window? A filename? Maybe some numbers off to the right? Is the status line even visible?
  • For far too many of us, the Vim status line is a sadly-neglected chunk of valuable Vim real estate, and it's capable of *way* more than most people realize. We'll cover some simple (and quick) ways to stuff it full of useful information, and then discuss a few tricks that – with just a little more effort – can take your Vim experience to a whole new level.
  • Bill has far too many years of experience as a systems architect and software developer, working on everything from wiki software for Internet startups to global identity management solutions for Fortune 500 companies. He’s an active member of the Open Source community, and even served as president of the Perl Foundation for a couple of years (but try not to hold that against him). He’s also a long-time user and advocate of Vim, and has given many well-received classes and presentations on Vim to several organizations throughout the US.
  • Bill gave well received talks/classes at Strange Loop and at the Ohio Linux Fest in 2011.
  • An additional bio provided for Strange Loop 2013 https://thestrangeloop.com/sessions/21st-century-vim)
  • Steve Stegman thinks CHUCK D is working Tutorial on Setting Up a VPN and had been scheduled for Sept!!! We are just PRESUMING it was best to let Bill Odom slip back to Sept since he was sick in Aug BUT if Chuck has been working hard to be ready for Sept, perhaps we should try to schedule Bill for later??!??
  • BUT, Bill frequently travels BUT we note that he usually speaks at StrangeLoop her ein St and that is the next day SO…he likely SHOULD be here Wed nite.
  • Gary exchanged texts with Bill last Friday but HAS NOT YET gotten a reply from this wknd on his intent. Gary will try to persue Bill & Chuck and resolve.
  • Possible backups are:
    • Hardware inspection using common tools - Stan R maybe (Best chance)
    • -OR- Search engines for open or default set-web-camera by Steve Stegmann. (Primary backup/runner up)
    • -OR- A Security Tool Demo by TonyZ
    • freeCAD by Steve Steve
    • LISP programming within EMACS by Steve Steve
  • MAIN: Amazon AWS Glacier HASH TREE -Using Functional programming rather than C for the HASH TREE by Steven Lembark.
    • There are 2 similar slide decks already existing in SlideShare.net/lembark. They are the 2nd & 3rd in the current order. I suggested to Steven that it would be best to add some material on: what is AWS Glacier & why we would want to compute the hash. Basically it is a needed so that you can make rapid use of inexpensive cloud storage.
  • *NOTE CONFLICTING COMPETITIVE LINUX TOPIC*
    • Linux Training 7pm – 9pm 235 Jungermann Road, Saint Peters, MO
  • Stan R plans to attend there rather than SLUUG General Meeting. Stan hopes to attract those at Inventor Forge to attend some of our mtngs, DISCUSS list, etc.
  • So, since Stan R. wasn't at SLUUG General Meeting nobody knew to print out an attendance sheet.

STLLUG - September 15

  • STLLUG is the St. Louis Linux Users Group.
    • TOPIC:
    • CONFLICT with City Museum Party at STRANGELOOP
      • SteerComm suggestion…have a NO TOPIC informal get together at Nick&Elaina's starting at 7. NO MTNG at UMSL's ITE. Gary will get Andrew's opinion on this.
      • I think that is a stupid idea. How many of the normal users go to strange loop? – Andrew Latham
    • I can not make the meeting, I will be gone for work that night. – Andrew Latham
    • We discussed the "less attendees" vs "more groups mtng" in town. The argument was made that the topics are so esoteric as to be UNinteresting to larger audiences.
    • Verify LUG availability of location for September
  • RESOLUTION= we DID have a regular mtng at UMSL's ITE. It was a complete carbon copy of Chuck's openVPN presentation from the nite before. In a way that good because it sank in better the second time and it gave Chuck a chance to rephrase things.
  • There were some new faces that weren't there at the general mtng who heard it for the 1st time.

SNUG - September 21

  • SNUG is the St. Louis Novell Users Group lunch time meeting.
    • TOPIC: "My experience w SuSE Leap 42.1" by Online Reviewer
    • Stan missed it!!
    • GOOD PRESENTATION by a non-pro who podcasts these reviews. Much better sound, visuals, and better coherence than the "professionally produced" presentations from the company!

Hazelwood - September 27

  • HZWLUG topics are usually determined by attendees. We usually cover more than one topic.
    • Web site lists a number of topics to provide general directions from which to take off
    • *NOTE LOCATION CHANGE FOR SEPTEMBER*
    • Meeting location change due to Library schedule conflicts
    • VENUE St. Louis County Library Thornhill Br

SLUUG OpenVPN Workshop - September 28

    • Special workshop held at Graybar
    • Was listed on our Calendars and in ANNOUNCE mailing list. Did not place on MEETUP.COM calendar.
    • Had 8 attendees.
  • FANTASTIC! Good to actally work thru it. But…also got to a "burnout point" for some folks but thats OK…next time they'll get more exposure.
