COOKIE TIME ~ ANNOUNCEMENTS ~ CALL FOR HELP (Gooey Middle ):
Docker and other systems for running infrastructure in containers have
become increasingly popular for businesses of all sizes over the past
few years. Whether you're running them to avoid configuration headaches,
for isolation between services, or to ensure a consistent deployment,
containers have many benefits over traditional system deployment methods.
In this talk, we'll go through a 101 level introduction to deploying
containerized infrastructure securely with Docker. The talk will cover
topics like patching, underlying host access, and automated tools to help
guard against mistakes. We'll also talk about some best practices for
building and deploying your containers that can help avoid trouble down
the road.
Bio:
Robert Ward is the co-founder and CTO of Juristat. In his role there
he's helped build a fully containerized infrastructure that handles
secure data from many of the top patent filers and firms in the country.
He is also a co-founder of Arch Reactor Hackerspace, and a co-organizer
of the monthly STL2600 meeting.
I've never trusted Docker containers. Everyone seems to love docker
though. They're always all like "Awe, no. Docker's a cool guy. He'll help
you move…yada yada yada". I don't buy it. Can't put my finger on it,
but Docker's always seemed shifty to me. But does anyone ever listen
to me? Nooooo! Meanwhile everyone just let's Docker hang out on their
servers, borrow their data and what not. Mark my words, you just let
Docker take advantage of you like that, you are just asking for trouble.
Alright. All I am asking is that you be careful. Take a few precautions
when you are dealing with Docker. Maybe I'm just being my paranoid
self but it can't hurt, right? That's where the next STL2600 + DC314
meeting comes in. Turn's out Docker is an old frat brother drinking buddy
or something of Bob's. Whatever he is, Bob's got a few tips on how to
handle Docker and not let it take advantage of you. So just hear him out,
and learn how to keep your containers safe and secure.

Gary would love to get a presentation on status of the servers, featuring Mike, Chuck, Lee
Another possibility would be Lee could give a presentation on massive data recovery being performed evening of 2019-04-29
Dave has noticed different handling of possible spam by SLUUG email system, and would like presentation on evolution of the email system.
Dave & Stan would like long 'spammy' tag not inserted into subject line on SLUUG STEERCOM emails
From Mike Knight's email 3:31am 2019-04-28:
1 QUESTION: Should the "Subject:" of probable sp_m be changed to indicate that?
2 QUESTION: Should high scoring sp_m be rejected and returned to sender?
3 QUESTION: Should moderate scoring sp_m be moved to a "junk" folder of the member's inbox by the system?

Lee: no updates this month. ClamAV & SpamAssassin are running, SA is giving scores, but up to user to decide what to do with them.
Gary: good that things are running, but would be nice to get a presentation on what is there and what it does. Would be good for everyone to realize what's been done to make things work.

ANNOUNCE Mailing List
SUMMARY: The ANNOUNCE mailing is a weekly extract of our SLUUG GOOGLE Calendar of Events. Historical descendant of our monthly newsletter. Previous editors have also styled it less of 1 liners of entire calendar and more of abstracts of OUR talks & outstanding interest items.
HISTORY: The subscriber list has been populated from attendance sheets by a nominating subscription process, which requires human input.
Minutes narratives prior to 2019 have been removed.
