STEERCOM - June 1

  • HISTORY Steering Committee usually meets on Monday of the week prior (9 days) to General Meeting.
    • No physical meeting until further notice
      • When we do have physical meetings, we might like to continue video meetings in conjunction with the physical meetings.
      • This session may be done with JITSI remote video service on https://nyx.omnitec.net/
        • Stan R will use Linux SimpleScreenRecorder to make recording
  • Link to planning Planning Schedule Report from Database.
    • :?:

SLACC - June 4

  • SLACC usually holds a Linux Workshop offering installation and configuration help - no presentation
    • No physical meeting until further notice
      • We may continue to have video meetings in conjunction with physical meetings after physical meetings resume
      • This session may be done with JITSI remote video service on https://nyx.omnitec.net/
        • Stan R will use Linux SimpleScreenRecorder to make recording
    • Stan: fewer people than expected, may be perception due to newcomer LUG. Familiar faces from last 8-9 years.

SLUUG - June 10

    • No physical meeting until further notice
    • We don't yet know when we will be able to have physical meeting
      • We want to have alternative (secondary) topic on hand if primary speaker doesn't show.
      • Stan R will use Linux SimpleScreenRecorder to make additional recording
    • BASE (Personal Computing):

      • WRANGLER:
      • ABSTRACT: No
      • BIO: No
      • REMARKS:
        • Gary: Fantastic presentation. Went longer than expected. Big non-main talk on ChromeBook. Good job, Don!
        • Stan: Better than expected. Seemed to have less technical aspect than usual

  • MAIN (Enterprise Computing):
    • STATUS: Done
    • WHAT: DNS Wars
    • BY: David Forrest
    • SYNOPSIS: A brief sketchy summary goes here.
    • WRANGLER:
    • ABSTRACT: No
    • BIO: No
    • REMARKS:
      • Dave: had problem with captioning, hard to understand who is saying what, won't do another presentation until better setup.
        • Disconnect between agencies, didn't have cooperation that would make things work better.
        • Individual user doesn't have the control they need. Browser DNS takes control away from supervisor/parent.
        • Firefox went to browser based DNS by default.
      • Gary: Went a lot better than expected.
        • Will post to Discuss that there's a big article about Mozilla using Cloud Flair.
      • Stan: Really good presentation.

STLLUG - June 18

      • BIO: NO
      • REMARKS:
        • We do not have an alternative (secondary) topic on hand.
        • Lee: Very Interesting
        • Dave: Agrees.
        • Stan: Didn't talk about bitcoin.
        • Gary: Very honest. Takes 10-100x resources as database.
        • Dave: Lot of problems getting agreement between supplier and sub. This can be effective solution. Needs increased data entry workforce, contract grows much larger. A whole new paradigm for construction process.
      • Gary disappointed with attendance. Had tried to attract blockchain enthusiasts, but no results. Contacted Meetups and Discuss lists. Blockchain session only had one or two we didn't recognize.
        • Will we ever get attendance like we used to? What's in it for sponsors?

NEWLUG - June 23

  • NEWLUG Our Linux Users Group for Linux Newcomers.
    • No physical meeting until further notice

    • TOPICS are usually determined by attendees. We usually cover more than one topic.
      • NEWLUG home page lists a number of topics to provide general directions from which to take off
    • Stan: Might be confusing with SLACC, but a guy had problems and could only do chat until he did the install. Phil & Stan did one-on-one Friday. Used Jitsi and got him going. Didn't record, so can't remember who it was. Confirmed. This was SLACC, not NewLUG.

Meeting Schedule

  • SUMMARY:
    • We try to track prospects to give presentations at our SLUUG General meeting and LINUX meetings.

    • LINUX topics could be either at the General meeting or at the St. Louis Linux Users Group (STLLUG) meetings.
    • Gary will continue to explore different computer manufacturers (ex: Cray) who might be able to do presentation "Where are they now?"

Server Admin

SUMMARY: We put up a server on the Internet for email, it grew, and now we have to maintain it.

  • *Minutes narratives prior to 2020 have been removed.*
  • 2019-12-30 (for January 2020)
    • Christmas Day SLUUG certificate would not work with securing email. Did not disrupt web site availability, nor remote SSH access. Mike Knight and Craig Bucheck tackled problem.
    • Successful test completed in September, will repeat in December
  • 2020-02-03
    • Our *automated* LetsEncrypt free SSL certificates for websites on BOCK test was successfully completed in September, was to be repeated in December.
      • There was a problem Christmas Day with SLUUG certificate holding up email.
      • QUESTION: Was this related?
        • Mike Knight created and tested some scripts dealing with our LetsEncrypt setup.
      • QUESTION: Do we know what happened with SLUUG certificate not working with securing the email on Christmas Day?
        • Certificate had expired, was renewed, but IMAP server didn't get restarted to incorporate new cert.
        • Now the process is scripted. A post renewal script for LetsEncrypt has been added to restart Courier (IMAP)
      • QUESTION: Do we have any documentation on the overall *automated* process for LetsEncrypt free SSL certificates for websites on BOCK?
    • Mike Knight is invesigating why SLUUG was being throttled by Google. Possibly something to do with the SLUUG SPF record being regarded as "suspicious" by Google.
  • 2020-03-02
  • 2020-03-30 (for April)
  • 2020-05-04
    • QUESTION: Do we have any documentation on the overall *automated* process for LetsEncrypt free SSL certificates for websites on BOCK?
# cat /etc/cron.daily/checkcert
#!/bin/bash

#MAILTO=""

/usr/bin/certbot renew
  • Automated renewal system crashed Christmas day 2019 and didn't recover. Mike has adjusted it to work properly and it appears to work as of March 2020; appears to have worked for June instance.
  • 2020-06-01
  • Lee said limited bandwidth of transfers was issue as to where we would put recordings.
  • Mike Knight is investigating why SLUUG was being throttled by Google. Possibly something to do with the SLUUG SPF record being regarded as "suspicious" by Google.
    • Mike? Answer?

Web Site SLUUG.ORG Maintenance

SUMMARY: We have a traditional Internet presence with the existence of our main SLUUG web site.

  • *Minutes narratives prior to 2020 have been removed.*
  • 2019-12-30 (for January 2020)
  • 2020-02-03
    • Stan R, did routine updating of home pages. Had no time for sorely needed cleanup, documentation, improvements, nor anything else.

      • Corrected the expected meeting schedule of the Steering Committee from Wednesday to Monday.
      • A line with two new links has been added:
        • The STEERCOM looks at *POTENTIAL* items in an attempt to provide *PLANNING* of future meeting dates, locations, and topics.
        • The *POTENTIAL* page information has been moved to the Planning Database and the page narrative is being merged into the *PLANNING* page and will then be next removed after this STEERCOM meeting.
      • The link to the obsolete calendar Events item is being deleted and is being replaced with a more current reference to our SLUUG Google Calendar.
    • Many of the other stanzas link to obsolete or incomplete wiki pages. Much of this is very misleading to anyone new that hasn't been around for years and accustomed to ignoring the mess.
