Agenda Changes

SUMMARY: This is where we consider any additions, deletions, sequence, or other changes to sequence of items in the prepared agenda.

  * HISTORY:
  * We consider changes prior to all reviews, planning and OLD BUSINESS items
    * by jumping ahead, then back, without altering agenda layout.
  * Do NOT alter agenda layout, during current meeting.
  * We will jump to *Old Business* items then back to usual sequence.
  * We will jump to *New Business* section, create new item, consider, then
    * jump back to usual sequence.
  * By not altering agenda layout we keep it easier to build the next agenda.
  * Moving a previous item out of sequence makes editing difficult.
  • AGENDA CHANGE:
  • Are there any additions, deletions, sequence, or other changes to sequence of items in the prepared agenda?

  * Stopped counting general Saint Louis County Library events in May 2016.
  * Re-counted April 2016 without library events.
  * Count of calendar entries for May is down from previous months. No explanation is given.
  * Count of calendar entries for March 2020 misleading because of
  * Limited maintenance effort for March 2020 because CORONAVIRUS-19 self-isolation effects.
  * Started counting **moved** and **delayed** items in April 2020 as considered being useful.
  * Improvements in Google Calendar feature limits to five days processing at at time, takes
    * about 10 times as long to perform counting. Much more tedious.
  * Five day limitation "improvement" gone, no longer takes so much longer to count.
  • 2022-01-31 Comments:
    • Of the 210 total, 5 were cancelled (x~), 0 defunct, 6 delayed, and 4 moved, and 0 postponed; so, leaving 195 active.
  • 2022-02-28 Comments:
    • Of the 219 total, 6 were cancelled, 34 (x~), 0 defunct, 10 delayed, and 3 moved, and 1 postponed; so, leaving 165 active.
  • 2022-04-04 Comments:
    • The February Calendar counts were not entered during the last meeting.

  • 2022-05-02 Comments:
    • Of the 219 total, 2 were cancelled, 44 (x~), 0 defunct, 5 delayed, 1 missed, and 5 moved, and 1 postponed; so, leaving 161 active.
    • QUESTION: Why was March 2022 count so much larger, while April dropped?
    • QUESTION: Should we replace the monthly total counts (January 2022 to date) entries with the active counts?
      • The total counts indicate how many entries we made, showing our work effort, and potential meetings; but, not actual meetings held.
      • Would be a lot of work (if even possible) to go back to change 2020 counts.
      • The active counts would be more realistic indication of how many actual meetings were held.
    • Suggest doing at, say, 1 July or 1 January.

  * Numbers as of end of each month.
  * Blocking of mailing list attachments not completely configured yet.
  * This will be much easier to do on BOCK.
  * ANNOUNCE mailing list.
    * Still no volunteer editor to do a quarterly or monthly newsletter.
  * Command used to generate these (as root on Bud):
    * /usr/local/mailman/bin/list_members **list_name** | wc -l (This doesn't seem to work on Bock.)

  • ISSUES:
  • We do NOT have any account access or control to our presence and videos on Google+ or YouTube.
  • We do NOT know how or what to count in Google+ NOR do we know how to metric videos.
  • We do NOT know how or what to count in YouTube NOR do we know how to metric videos.
  • No way to change meeting dates or set temporary hiatus in Google+
  • Don will investigate Google+ status
  • Don will place credentials for YouTube and any others on Bock /home/sluug
  • 2022-01-10 Comments about December: None
  • 2022-01-31 Comments about January: Slight increases.
  • 2022-02-28 Comments for March:
    • Per Gary looking at last 4 years, DISCUSS slow rebuilding very slowly, ANNOUNCE rebuilt about 10 to 16 people, from large loss of about 100.
    • ANNOUNCE used to be monthly newsletter, then Stan R used it for a weekly highlite. Now mostly just to spread ZOOM and JITSI links.
  • 2022-04-04 Comments: Very little change from last month. Amazing how many are in MEETUP and we only see a few.
  • 2022-05-02 Comments:
    • Neither SLUUG nor variations of St. Louis Unix show any channels in search, .. "sluug" is someone playing slither.io.
    • Found under "Saint Louis Unix Users Group and Linux", wonky name.
    • Don has credentials, need to find someone interested in updating.
  • 2022-05-31 Comments for June: None

    • Last thing they did was presentation for SLUUG on replacing Centose in Fall of 2021.

    • After first 20 minutes Stan R ( co-host ) had severe connectivity issues. Disconnecting and reconnecting JITSI session did not fix problems.
    • Phil Bunch ( co-host ) continued meeting without Stan R video and voice, with Stan R still using the Anonymous Coward connection to monitor.
    • Stan R later found that only corrective action was to reboot his ISP Internet modem. This solution was not understood during meeting.
    • During session members provided work-around to a printer issue that had not been resolved when newcomer posted problem to DISCUSS list.
  • 2023-01-30 Comments:
    • Lots of grey beards.

NEWLINUX - Janurary 24th, 2023

SUMMARY: Previously named Hazelwood LUG (HZWLUG), then Newcomer LUG (NEWLUG). Now, Newcomer Linux User Group is designated as NEWLINUX. The NEWLINUX home page lists a number of topics to provide general directions from which we could start. Topics are usually determined by attendees. We usually cover way more than one topic.

  • NEWLUG was how we named our Linux Users Group (LUG) for Linux Newcomers.
    • NEWLINUX is name that we can frequently use for our Newcomer Linux Users Group.
  • 2023-01-30 Comments:
    • We had one new participant the had severe trouble connecting. He was constantly being connected and disconnected because
    • of very low speed. He was using the Opera browser and connecting thru a VPN ( Virtual Private Network ) connection.
    • Ultimately he switched to using FireFox and also connected to a VPN server closer to Saint Louis. After that the cycling
    • of his constant dropping stopped. VPN latency likely the problem.

    • *BASE* Something fundamental, introductory, instructive or simple.
  • * *MAIN* topics should be oriented more toward advanced or Professional Computing. Usually given at General meeting (SLUUG).

  • * *LINUX* topics often could be either at the General meeting or at the St. Louis Linux Users Group (STLLINUX) meetings.
  • We want to have alternative (secondary) topic on hand if primary speaker doesn't show.
  • Gary will continue to explore different computer manufacturers (ex: Cray) who might be able to do presentation "Where are they now?"

    • So far Stan R is keeping our traditional red and powder blue colors at top of page. There may be further changes or improvements.

Hybrid Meetings

SUMMARY: Combine recording physical plus remote meetings

  * HISTORY:
      * We have for the longest time been saying:
      * **No physical face-to-face meetings until further notice.**
      * When we again have physical meetings, we would like to continue video meetings in conjunction with any physical meetings.
      * So, in anticipation of future openings of libraries and restaurants,
        * reduction of lock-down, we need to work toward perfecting the technology.
  • 2021-07-05
    • Project considerations
      • Locations
      • Schedule ~ Timeline
    • Assets
      • Staffing

        • Project Wrangler ~ Steve Stegmann (if he will remember)
        • Recording Hardware ~ Lee Lammert
        • Recording Software ~ Tyler Rudie (had been experimenting with OBS during July STLLINUX meeting)
        • Remote Virtual Software ~ ZOOM or Jitsi (maybe better) ?
        • Head Count (local clipboard and remote software participant panel to capture attendance).
        • Production Chief(s) ~
          • does recording and archives.
          • one for remote and one for live location
        • Minions
      • Equipment ~ inventory ~ splitter ~ projectors ~ microphones ~ cameras ~ smartphone cameras ~ portability

        • Capabilities ~ Remote Video ~ Chat ~ Recording ~ Screen Sharing ~ YouTube Streaming?
        • Documentation ~ Diagrams ~ Limitations

    • Discussion:
      • Gary M virtual remote experience at 2600 club was not good. They did not have splitter for hybrid session.
      • Lee figures harder, quite difficult, do we want to really do it. How do we do recordings?
      • Stan R says local noise too much at restaurants.
      • Head counts need to be considered. Gary once shared ZOOM participant panel. We need to promote sharing participant panel(s) for count heads.
      • Stan R has less problem using Jitsi.
      • Stan R thought Jitsi does not have built in recording (may not be true).
      • Stan R uses Linux SimpleScreenRecorder (SSR) to record all remote sessions. Specifically activates participant panel while recording sessions with SSR.
      • We must consider when will libraries open up. Also, Siemens, Nick and Elena's restaurant.
      • Gary suggests we move this topic earlier in agenda. We don't expect to make much progress right away; but, need to keep in mind.
  • 2021-08-02 * Lee and Tyler still to combine efforts.

  • 2022-04-04 Comments:
    • Both Gary and Stan R have remotely attended STL2600 club meetings. Their hybrid meeting attempt was of extremely poor quality.
    • Stan R thinks hybrid meetings would require separate production efforts. Live attendance sheets and remote attendance efforts.
    • Gary believes by-laws specify attendance taking for vote qualification. We might consider changing by-laws.
    • Lee seconds that we need a real good microphone (not condenser).
  • 2022-05-02 Comments:

Change BASE and MAIN Structure

General Meeting BASE portions go too long. Volunteers tend to do topics beyond introductory level. Scaling back subjects and length of coverage might be a good thing. * Stan R posted to SteerCom mailing list for prior discussion. * Stan R suggests that we start pulling simple ideas from our Planning Schedule Report and by using a facilitator (or two) encourage and guide participation covering that single topic. Simply starting out by presenting a relevant man page might work to get folks to join in. Keeping it short and simple (KISS).

  • 2022-09-07 Comments:
    • Stan R volunteers for first trial run next week.
    • Lee suggest Q&A first, then call-for-help before MAIN.
    • Scott G considering a number of smaller topics for this month.
    • Dave Forrest urged us to start doing captions during meetings.
    • Steve found two other references and posted to DISCUSS:
    https://www.pisd.edu/cms/lib/TX02215173/Centricity/Domain/9379/Automated%2520Captions%2520in%2520Zoom.pdf
    https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/4409683389709-Enabling-or-disabling-closed-captioning-and-live-transcription-services

  • Gary found under the App Button (or More Button) there is reference to Wordly transcription service.
    • Colibri ~ makes transcripts and meeting notes (license requirements preclude our use).
    • Gary will post and summarize on Steve's DISCUSS posting.
  • 2022-10-03 Comments:
  • Changed 12 September SLUUG General Meeting. Instead of a BASE and a MAIN, had 3 short Rolling Thunder Talks.
  • ZOOM somehow gave us an extra file that was closed captions.
  • We should be much more flexible in structure and not restrict to BASE and MAIN, allowing for multiple short topics.
  • 2022-11-02 Comments: We agree, worth doing again. Might even be routine, like February instead of Lightning Talks.
  • 2022-12-05 Comments: Still a very good option to have multiple short presentations.
  • 2023-01-09 Comments:
  • 2023-01-30 Comments: We're a friendly group, .. if you have a topic that you think would be good, you don't
  • have to be an expert!!

  • Suggest we direct item to DISCUSS mailing list.
  • 2022-11-02 Comments: Gary not here to follow up.
  • 2022-12-05 Comments: Gary here; but, didn' t do anything.
  • 2023-01-09 Comments:
